Different Adventures for Young Island Hoppers

Not only have we designed a clinic to meet each age's needs, we have a comprehensive toddler program that will help your little one prepare for their first solo expedition in dentistry. Explore our toddler first visits:

First Swim! (Age 1)

Start their smile journey in paradise! Around your child's first birthday, join our crew for a complimentary short visit. This gentle introduction ensures their dental development is on smooth waters and helps us establish healthy habits that keep their smile as bright as the tropical sun.

We’ll walk you through our "Island Guide" to a cavity-free smile, covering:

  • Tropical Nutrition: How to navigate milk-based nutrition, early bonding, and cavity prevention
  • Home Care: The best "tools of the trade" for early brushing including positioning, techniques, and toothpaste selections.
  • Early Habits: Exploring the pros and cons of pacifier or thumb habits with ease.

This visit officially welcomes you to our practice family, ensuring we’re ready to help if you ever encounter an after-hours emergency.

Pro Tip: We suggest docking here for a morning appointment—young explorers are usually much happier before the afternoon nap-time tide rolls in!

The Toddler Trek! (Age 2)

It’s time for a Quick Look! At age two, kids are like little tropical birds—always ready to fly! That’s why we keep this complimentary check-in fast and focused.

We’ll take a quick peek to make sure their smile is staying "island-strong," exploring:

  • The Big Waves: We’ll review the "Big Three" - snacks, brushing techniques, and harmful habits.
  • Hidden Treasure: We’ll share our top cavity-fighting secrets so you can keep that smile glowing.
  • Tropical Trust: This visit is all about building a trusted relationship in our fun, tropical setting...with their memorable first visit to our prize wall!

Timing is Everything: Catch the morning tide! Mornings are the best time for toddlers to visit before the afternoon energy shift.

The Semi-Solo Expedition (Age 3+)

Around age 3 to 3½, it’s time to attempt a full island expedition, including a cleaning, detailed exam, and fluoride treatment.

  • Navigating the Waters: We say “attempt” because every explorer moves at their own pace. It is much more important to our crew that your child has a positive experience than to "push through" a cleaning if they feel a bit stormy.
  • Smooth Sailing: If we only get through an exam or just the cleaning, that’s a win! If we don’t accomplish much at all, that’s okay too. We want them to leave with happy memories so they are ready to try again on their next voyage.
  • Island Essentials: A successful first check-up sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy, sun-kissed smiles.

Adventure planning: We highly recommend scheduling this first "big" visit in the morning. As any seasoned captain knows, the waters are much calmer before the afternoon clouds roll in!

Why Toddler Dental Care Matters

Toddlerhood is a critical time for shaping lifelong oral health habits. With the right support, children can learn to enjoy caring for their smiles, and parents gain tools to guide them with confidence.

Our team is here to make that journey joyful, educational, and as stress-free as possible.

Toddler Teeth Development

Most children begin teething between six months and one year of age. The lower front teeth often appear first, followed by one to two new teeth each month.

By age three, most toddlers have a full set of 20 baby teeth. These teeth play an important role in speech, nutrition, facial development, and saving space for permanent teeth. During routine visits, our team monitors your child’s development and helps you understand what to expect at each stage.

What Is Teething?

Teething begins when primary teeth start to emerge through the gums, usually between six and 19 months of age. This process can cause tenderness, inflammation, fussiness, and disrupted sleep.

At Pediatric Dentistry of Loveland, we help parents navigate teething with safe, practical recommendations, including soothing routines, teething toys, and appropriate over-the-counter options when needed.

How to Clean Your Toddler’s Teeth and Gums

As your toddler’s teeth erupt, keeping their mouth clean is essential for preventing early cavities.

For gums, you can gently wipe the area with a soft, damp cloth or gauze pad. Once teeth appear, use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush. Toothpaste should be introduced once the first tooth erupts, and our team will walk you through the best type and amount for your child’s age.

Flossing may also begin during the toddler years if teeth touch. We are happy to show you how to make brushing and flossing simple, playful, and effective.
